Vishnu tells it to the mother of the child, and it is an etymological hymn: eight names, each taken apart rather than merely said. Ganesha, Ekadanta, Heramba, Vighnanayaka, Lambodara, Shurpakarna, Gajavaktra and Guhagraja are given first as a list, and then unpacked one by one. Ga, it says, denotes knowledge, and na denotes nirvana; I bow to Ganesha, the supreme brahman who is lord of the two. The rest follow the same method, so that the hymn amounts to a short lexicon of the name. It comes from the Ganapati Khanda of the Brahmavaivarta Purana, and its closing promise is graded by what the reciter came for — a son to whoever wants a son, a wife to whoever wants a wife, and to the very dullest, that he becomes a chief among poets and learned men.

శ్రీవిష్ణురువాచ (భగవాన విష్ణు బోలే):
గణేశమేకదన్తం చ హేరమ్బం విఘ్ననాయకమ్ ।
లమ్బోదరం శూర్పకర్ణం గజవక్త్రం గుహాగ్రజమ్ ॥ ౧ ॥
నామాష్టార్థం చ పుత్రస్య శృణు మాతర్హరప్రియే ।
స్తోత్రాణాం సారభూతం చ సర్వవిఘ్నహరం పరమ్ ॥ ౨ ॥
జ్ఞానార్థవాచకో గశ్చ ణశ్చ నిర్వాణవాచకః ।
తయోరీశం పరం బ్రహ్మ గణేశం ప్రణమామ్యహమ్ ॥ ౩ ॥
ఏకశబ్దః ప్రధానార్థో దన్తశ్చ బలవాచకః ।
బలం ప్రధానం సర్వస్మాదేకదన్తం నమామ్యహమ్ ॥ ౪ ॥
దీనార్థవాచకో హేశ్చ రమ్బః పాలకవాచకః ।
దీనానాం పరిపాలకం హేరమ్బం ప్రణమామ్యహమ్ ॥ ౫ ॥
విపత్తివాచకో విఘ్నో నాయకః ఖణ్డనార్థకః ।
విపత్ఖణ్డనకారకం నమామి విఘ్ననాయకమ్ ॥ ౬ ॥
విష్ణుదత్తైశ్చ నైవేద్యైర్యస్య లమ్బోదరం పురా ।
పిత్రా దత్తైశ్చ వివిధైర్వన్దే లమ్బోదరం చ తమ్ ॥ ౭ ॥
శూర్పాకారౌ చ యత్కర్ణౌ విఘ్నవారణకారణౌ ।
సమ్పదౌ జ్ఞానరూపౌ చ శూర్పకర్ణం నమామ్యహమ్ ॥ ౮ ॥
విష్ణుప్రసాదపుష్పం చ యన్మూర్ధ్ని మునిదత్తకమ్ ।
తం గజేన్ద్రవక్త్రయుక్తం గజవక్త్రం నమామ్యహమ్ ॥ ౯ ॥
గుహస్యాగ్రే చ జాతోఽయమావిర్భూతో హరాలయే ।
వన్దే గుహాగ్రజం దేవం సర్వదేవాగ్రపూజితమ్ ॥ ౧౦ ॥

ఏతన్నామాష్టకం స్తోత్రం నానార్థసమ్యుతం శుభమ్ ।
త్రిసన్ధ్యం యః పఠేన్నిత్యం స సుఖీ సర్వతో జయీ ॥ ౧౧ ॥
తతో విఘ్నాః పలాయన్తే వైనతేయాద్యథోరగాః ।
గణేశ్వరప్రసాదేన మహాజ్ఞానీ భవేద్ధ్రువమ్ ॥ ౧౨ ॥
పుత్రార్థీ లభతే పుత్రం భార్యార్థీ విపులాం స్త్రియమ్ ।
మహాజడః కవీన్ద్రశ్చ విద్యావాంశ్చ భవేద్ధ్రువమ్ ॥ ౧౩ ॥
