సూర్యాష్టకమ్

Salutations to you O Adideva (the first god), please be gracious to me O Bhaskara (the shining one), O Divakara (the maker of the day), O Prabhakara (the maker of light), my salutations to you.

Salutations to Sri Surya deva! you are mounted on a chariot driven by seven horses, you are excessively energetic and the son of sage Kashyapa, you are the deva who holds a white lotus (in your hand); I salute you, O Surya deva.

Salutations to Sri Surya deva! you are reddish in colour, and mounted on a chariot; you are the forefather of all persons (being the Adideva, the first god), you are the deva who removes great sins from our minds (by your illumination); I salute you, O Surya deva.

Salutations to Sri Surya deva! you are the heroic one having the three gunas of Brahma, Vishnu and Maheswara (i.e. qualities of creation, sustenance and dissolution), you are the deva who removes great sins from our minds (by your illumination);I salute you, O Surya deva.

The swelling mass of all radiance, the wind and the very sky, the lord of all the worlds — to that Sun I bow.

Salutations to Sri Surya deva! you appear beautiful like a red hibiscus flower and you are adorned with garland and ear-rings, you are the deva who holds a discus in one hand; I salute you, O Surya deva.

Salutations to Sri Surya deva! you, O Surya deva are the agent behind the world (i.e. who gives energy for action to everyone), you enliven others with great energy (and thus imparting the ability to work), you are the deva who removes great sins from our minds (by your illumination); I salute you, O Surya deva.

Salutations to Sri Surya deva! you, O Surya deva are the lord of the world, who grants understanding and knowledge which leads to liberation, you are the deva who removes great sins from our minds (by your illumination); I salute you, O Surya deva.

Fruit of recitation: Whoever recites the Sūryāṣṭakam daily destroys the affliction of the planets. The sonless obtains a son, and the poor man becomes wealthy.

Whoever takes flesh or honey-wine upon the Sun’s day is stricken with illness for seven births, and poverty follows both his birth and his deeds.

Those who upon the Sun’s day forgo women, oil, honey and flesh know neither sickness nor sorrow nor want, and go to the world of the Sun.
