anvaya pañcaślokigaṇeśapurāṇam
chandas Prose, the title
gaṇeśapurāṇa the Ganesha Purana — The long Ganapatya Purana in two books: the Upasana Khanda on his worship, and the Krida Khanda on his play, his descents in the four ages. These five verses summarise both.

note Each of the great figures is shown worshipping Ganesha before a great work: Shiva before a battle, Brahma before creation, Vyasa before writing.

saṅkaṣṭī Sankashti — The fourth day of the dark fortnight, kept every month with a fast broken at moonrise.
pārthiva the clay image — Parthiva means made of earth. The clay Ganesha of the Chaturthi festival is exactly this, and the Purana gives the rules for worshipping it.

chandas Śārdūlavikrīḍita, 19 syllables in each of 4 pādas
rasabhuja six-armed — Rasa, taste, stands for six because there are six tastes. Numbers in these verses are often given this way.

chandas Śārdūlavikrīḍita, 19 syllables in each of 4 pādas
sindura the demon Sindura — In this telling, the red sindura on Ganesha's image is the demon Sindura, crushed and worn as a mark of the victory.
yugabhuja four-armed — Yuga, an age, stands for four, since there are four ages. This is the same way of giving numbers as rasa for six in the verse before.
note dvāpāre is dvāpare with the second vowel lengthened, which the metre needs.

chandas Śārdūlavikrīḍita, 19 syllables in each of 4 pādas
gaṇeśagītā the Gita — The Ganesha Gita, taught to King Varenya who raised him. It follows the Bhagavad Gita closely, with Ganesha in Krishna's place.
mleccha the mlecchas — Those outside the order of the Veda. In the Purana, Dhumraketu comes at the end of the Kali age to put an end to lawlessness, as Kalki does in the Vishnu tradition.
note dvibhujo sito is read dvibhujo'sito, two-armed and dark, with the avagraha lost in printing. The ending -o before s is only possible that way, and Dhumraketu is the smoke-coloured form.
